HAZELL RAY-BILLINGTON
Hazell grew up in the Melbourne suburb of Canterbury in Victoria. At school she showed a flair for art, but did not pursue it until she began travelling as a young adult, first to the UK and Europe and then when working in the north of South Australia. However, it was not until the 70s when she commenced studying under the artist David Beech in Ringwood that she began to find her artistic abilities. Under the guidance of David, Hazell entered the Swan Hill Inaugural Art Award and as a result was offered a solo exhibition at the Swan Hill Regional Gallery, where one of her paintings is now in the permanent
collection.
When raising her family Hazell’s painting time was reduced, although she did attend classes from time to time urged on by her husband, Colin. She paints in acrylics, and
watercolour, but particularly loves working in pastel—and charcoal. She has won
several awards for watercolour and pastel works.
Hazell has two adult daughters and she and Colin live with their obligatory dogs and cats at Inverloch, a beautiful area of South Gippsland in Victoria. Hazell is an active member of the Bass Coast Artists’ Society and exhibits at various exhibitions throughout the year.
